Overnight fire at controversial Berczy Park

Flames engulf popular downtown Toronto park space

Intentional act suspected

A fire has ripped through Berczy Park, a popular downtown Toronto park space, overnight.

Firefighters were called to the scene at around 2 a.m. and found the park engulfed in flames.

Crews managed to get the fire under control, but not before it caused extensive damage to the park.

The fire destroyed several trees, a gazebo, and a children's play area.

No injuries have been reported.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire, but believe it was intentionally set.

Berczy Park has been the site of controversy in recent years, as some residents have called for it to be closed due to its association with drug use and homelessness.

The park is also home to a number of historical buildings, including the St. Lawrence Market.
